Well i agree with koshi,heard players getting this issue lately.

It happened to me also twice lately while trying to improve performance with mods,my ping went 1k then kicked. But after removed these mods and reinstall minecraft all good now.

Over and under its like 5 block square around the nexus. About nexus damage timer,it will be a lot better cause in some map like pirates game ends in less than 10 minute and i don't see the fun in that.
